Paddling

The paddling sessions use one or more of our specially designed boats. These have two hulls like a catamaran so are extremely stable giving confidence to even the most nervous of boaters. Coupled with the addition of two ABT volunteers (one to steer and one to paddle) makes it is ideal for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. There is no pressure or expectation that everybody must paddle all the time and individuals can paddle as much or as little as they feel able although we do expect at least some of the group to be actively paddling. It is even ok if some people don’t paddle at all but simply enjoy the sensory experience of being on the water. With no pressure on people having to paddle energetically it allows us to take a leisurely trip along the river getting close to the wild life and watching all the other river users. That said for the more energetic if requested, we can also arrange races between the boats. No prizes just for bragging rights!

A wonderful experience for everybody

One of our boats has a modified seating position that is suitable for many wheelchair users. We can lift the paddler into and out of the boat using our hoist allowing them to get on the river and either paddle of just enjoy the experience of seeing the wildlife close up.

Paddling sessions are suitable a wide range of participants:

SEND Schools Several schools bring groups of school children for a 1-2 hour paddling session together with the opportunity of a picnic under the stretch tent.

SEND Duke of Edinburgh D of E expeditions are organised to meet the abilities of the team. ABT is not a D of E provider but it facilitates the schools planning of a multi-day expedition by proving the boats over a longer course and the opportunity to camp overnight at Bisham Abbey.

Groups Groups of parent/children either organised by the schools or by the parents themselves (such as an SEND Holiday Club) and the sessions are very similar to the schools sessions with one or more boats going out together typically spending a couple of hours on the water. The total time at Bisham Abbey is much longer when a picnic is included. These sessions tend to be at the weekend or during school holidays.

Families and Individuals As the boats are very stable they are ideal for a family group whether large or small (potentially consisting of only one child and a parent) to have an activity that the whole family can do together. These sessions are planned with the family to ensure they meet their specific needs.

Irrespective of which type of group you are, you will always have exclusive use of the boats for your outing. This helps ensure a calm and safe environment for the more anxious members of the group.

Buoyancy aids, paddles and tuition are all included as is the support boat ensuring everything runs smoothly and that paddles ‘lost’ overboard can be recovered. (Five paddles overboard from one boat is the record but we are not challenging anybody to try and exceed this).
