Motor Boating FAQs

Is there Disabled parking and easy access at Bisham Abbey?

Yes there is space for cars and mini buses within about 100m of the pontoons/tent. The paths to the boats and picnic area are tarmac and level so wheelchair friendly.

Is there somewhere where we can shelter from the sun/rain?

Yes. We have a large stretch tent with views of the river and easy access picnic benches where you can rest, relax and eat your lunch.

Is the session shared with other groups and how are they run?

No. We are aware that many of the participants are sensitive to their environment and so in order to tailor each session their needs the session is limited to one family or group. The details each session are discussed and agreed with the family/carers. The sessions are run under the supervision of Bisham Abbey Sailing and Navigation School and in accordance with their procedures and policies including Safeguarding.

How long is each session?

If the motor boat trip is part of a large group picnic then each trip on might be 20-40 minutes so that everybody has a chance to get on the river. If the trip is just one family or small group i.e. the same group remains on the boat for the entire session, then a trip might typically be 2 hours although longer trips can be organised. Please contact us to discuss.

If somebody does not feel comfortable or becomes ill or distressed can the trip be finished early?

Yes. While there is much evidence that being on the river has a calming effect we are aware that on any particular day it might be appropriate to finish a session early or have a short shore break before setting off again. The trip is personalised and the ABT volunteers are happy to make the appropriate adjustments in consultation with family/carers. If you are unsure please contact us to discuss arranging a familiarisation visit.

What is the timing of the day?

The details are agreed with each group depending upon their requirements.

Do you provide food and drink

No you are responsible for the food and drink. A 240v socket can be made available in the stretch tent and we can supply a kettle and microwave if required. There is a café on site within Bisham Leisure club which is about a 10 minute walk.

Can I take a picnic on the motor boat?

Yes.

Are there toilets on the boat?

No.

Are there accessible toilets on site?

Yes. There are male and female accessible toilets. Unfortunately we do not have a changing table.

How many people will the boat hold?

The two constraints are overall weight and space. As a rule of thumb 2 wheelchairs and 8 people (excluding the crew) is the maximum however these are reduced if the wheelchair(s) are large powered units rather than lighter manual chairs. Also if some of the people are small children the number can increase slightly. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Will you run a session with just two people?

Yes. We recognise that in some instances the needs of the individual is such that they need a very quiet and calm environment or possibly it’s not easy to organise a bigger group. We will provide a helm and crew to help.

Can I have a go at steering?

Yes. We always have a trained helm on board but there is no reason why you cannot have a go yourself.

Is an able bodied person required to also go in the boat?

Yes. We require the adult who is responsible for the care of participant to be in the boat. The number of responsible adults depends upon the needs of the group.

Do I need my own lifejacket?

No. We supply life jackets/buoyance aids as appropriate.

Are you a member of recognised organisation?

Yes. Accessible Boating Thames is a registered Charity and a member of the RYA Sailability program. Bisham Abbey Sailing and Navigation School (BASNS) is an RYA Sailability Centre of Excellence and Registered Training Centre.

How much does a boating session cost?

ABT does not currently formally charge for its boating sessions relying on donations instead. The suggested donation for a motor boat session is £30. Where the motor boating is part of a larger group event then the suggested donation for the event is £5-£10 per person.

What happens if we have to cancel at the last moment?

We understand that late changes happen from time to time and when it does we will aim to agree another date with you. There are no charges if this happens.

Weather and River Conditions

ABT reserves the right to cancel a session in the event of bad weather or adverse river conditions. The session can be rescheduled at no cost or a full refund if rescheduling is impractical.
