Training and Certification

The water based operations of Accessible Boating Thames are run under the process and procedures of Bisham Abbey Sailing School, which is an Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Sailability Centre of Excellence. RYA Sailability is the RYA’s disability sailing programme. The RYA defines the levels of training required for each of the different roles. The Bellboat helming training is delivered by British Canoeing certified trainers.

In addition Accessible Boating Thames is an RYA Sailability Centre.

Bellboat Helms hold a British Canoeing Bellboat Helm certificate as well as RYA first aid training.

Wheelyboat helms have either an RYA Powerboat Level 2 or Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate to take charge of the boat as well as some experience as crew, particularly for loading the boat and transiting our local locks. They also have RYA First Aid Training.

Our safety boat helms have either RYA Power Boat Level 2 or Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate as well as RYA first aid training.

Sailing buddies have experience in dinghy sailing or large boat sailing and an RYA sailing certificate or an assessment by a BASNS sailing instructor as well as RYA first aid training.

In addition to the formal qualifications ABT runs regular training sessions which are overseen by the BASNS.
