What should I wear?
Two things not to wear are wellington boots or anything similar and shoes with heels. Light trainers are ideal. Otherwise dress for the weather. One thing to bear in mind is that being on water does increase the power of the sun and there is no shade on the boat so if it is sunny we recommend that everybody has a sun hat, plenty of sun cream and maybe a loose long-sleeved top. If you are uncertain please get in touch and we will be happy to help.
Is there Disabled parking and easy access at Bisham Abbey?
Yes there is space for cars and mini buses within about 100m of the pontoons/tent. The paths to the boats and picnic area are tarmac and level so wheelchair friendly.
Is there somewhere where we can shelter from the sun/rain?
Yes. We have a large stretch tent with views of the river and easy access picnic benches where you can rest, relax and eat your lunch.
Is the session shared with other groups and how are they run?
No. Each boating sessions is limited to one family or group. This allows the details of each session to be tailored to the needs and abilities of the group.
How long is each session?
This depends upon the group. An individual or family session would typically be 1 to 2 hours although this is agreed with the participants and can be longer or shorter.
SEND School sessions typically last 3 hours. A group session probably last longer as not all this time is on the water. Total time at Bisham Abbey includes getting everybody prepared, paddling briefing, and enjoying any picnic you bring or if you just want to spend time relaxing by the river. The focus is on fun and relaxation so the session is deliberately not tightly timetabled.
Duke of Edinburgh expeditions are clearly specific to the group and are longer.
What is the timing of the day?
The details are agreed with each group depending upon their requirements.
Do you provide food and drink?
No you are responsible for your own food and drink. There is 240v socket available in the stretch tent and we can supply a kettle and microwave if required. There is a café on site within Bisham Leisure club which is about a 10 minute walk.
Are there accessible toilets?
Yes. There are male and female accessible toilets. Unfortunately we do not have a changing table.
How many people can we bring along?
This does depend upon what boating is planned. In practice we find that 25-30 people is the most we can accommodate for a group session and hopefully ensure that everybody gets on the water. A family group might only be three or four. Please note that ABT only provides boating services and you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of the group.
Will you run a session with just two people?
Yes. We recognise that in some instances the needs of the individual is such that they need a very quiet and calm environment or possibly it’s not easy to organise a bigger group. We will provide a helm and crew to help with the paddling.
Can I have a go at steering?
Yes. We always have a trained helm on board but there is no reason why you cannot have a go yourself.
Is an able bodied person required to also go on the boat?
Yes. We require the adult who is responsible for the care of the participant to be in the boat. With larger groups the number of responsible adults depends upon the needs of the group.
Are you a member of recognised organisation?
Yes. Accessible Boating Thames is a registered Charity and a member of the RYA Sailability program.
How many people paddle at the same time?
The boats have seats for 10 paddlers and one or two crew. This number is reduced slightly depending upon the size of the paddlers and whether the boat with modified seating is used. The modified boat can take two wheelchair users.
Are the modified seats suitable for everybody?
The modified seats do support the torso of the paddler to a certain extent. Please contact us to discuss if the boat is suitable to meet particular person’s needs.
I’ve never paddled before will I be OK?
Yes. Many of our paddlers have never been in a boat like this or even had the opportunity to get on the water before they arrive at Bisham Abbey. The boats are wide and very stable and the helm will explain what to do.
How much does a Paddling session cost?
ABT does not currently formally charge for it’s boating sessions but instead relies on donations to fund its operation. The suggested donation is £30 for an individual or a family outing. Where the paddling is part of a larger group event the suggested donation for the event is £5-10 per person. The suggested donation for an SEND schools event is £150 for a standard session and £200 per day for a Duke of Edinburgh expedition.
What happens if we have to cancel at the last moment?
We understand that late changes happen from time to time and when it does we will aim to agree another date with you. There are no charges if this happens.
Weather and River Conditions
ABT reserves the right to cancel a session in the event of bad weather or adverse river conditions. The session can be rescheduled at no cost or a full refund if rescheduling is impractical.
