Electric Inflatable FAQs

What should I wear?

Two things NOT to wear are wellington boots or anything similar and shoes with heels. Light trainers are ideal. Otherwise dress for the weather. One thing to bear in mind is that being on water does increase the power of the sun and there is no shade on the boat so if it is sunny we recommend that everybody has a sun hat, plenty of sun cream and maybe a loose long-sleeved top. If you are uncertain please get in touch and we will be happy to help.

Who is this suitable for?

Most suitable for young reasonably agile adults or children who prefer to be in a very small group in a very quiet boat and get close to the water.

I’ve never been in a small boat before will I be OK?

Yes. Many of our clients have never been in a boat like this or even had the opportunity to get on the water before they arrive at Bisham Abbey. The ABT volunteers are experienced in helping beginners feel safe and confident

Is there Disabled parking and easy access at Bisham Abbey?

Yes there is space for cars and mini buses within about 100m of the pontoons/tent. The paths to the boats and picnic area are tarmac and level so wheelchair friendly.

Is there somewhere where we can shelter from the sun/rain?

Yes. We have a large stretch tent with views of the river and easy access picnic benches where you can rest, relax and eat your lunch. There is no cover on the boat itself.

Is the session shared with other groups and how are they run?

No. Each boating sessions is limited to one family or small group

How long is each session?

The battery life of the engine limits a session to a maximum of 1.5 hours and we stay on the river between Marlow and Temple locks. There is no problem if for any reason you want to shorten the outing.

As well as the time actually on the boat there is also the time it takes to get ready and maybe some time to relax by the river with a picnic as well.

What is the timing of the day?

The details are agreed with each group depending upon their requirements.

Do you provide food and drink

No the clients are responsible for the food and drink. You are free to use the stretch tent and benches for your picnic. There is an accessible café on site within Bisham Leisure club which is about a 10 minute step-free walk.

Are there accessible toilets?

Yes. There are male and female accessible toilets. Unfortunately we do not have a changing table.

How many people can we bring along?

The boat will take four people one of whom is the ABT skipper. Two small children are considered one adult.

Can I have a go at steering?

Yes. We always have a trained helm on board but there is no reason why you cannot have a go yourself.

Is an able bodied person required to also go on the boat?

Yes. We require the adult who is responsible for the care of client to be in the boat. However if you are over 18 and live independently please contact us to discuss this requirement.

Are you a member of recognised organisation?

Yes. Accessible Boating Thames is a registered Charity and a member of the RYA Sailability program. Bisham Abbey Sailing and Navigation School (BASNS) is an RYA Sailability Centre of Excellence and Registered Training Centre.

Can we come and see the facilities before we decide?

Yes. You are more than welcome to arrange a visit to Bisham Abbey and we will be pleased to show you around and answer any questions that you might have.

What happens if we have to cancel at the last moment?

We understand that late changes happen from time to time and when it does we will aim to agree another date with you. There are no charges if this happens.

Weather and River Conditions

ABT reserves the right to cancel a session in the event of bad weather or adverse river conditions. The session can be rescheduled at no cost or a full refund if rescheduling is impractical.
